Westinghouse to fuel Koeberg

FUEL for Eskom’s Koeberg nuclear power plant will be provided by Westinghouse Electric Company’s Swedish operations.

In a statement today, Westinghouse said it had been selected by Eskom Holdings to provide 3 reloads of fuel for the Koeberg Nuclear Power Plant, north of Cape Town, from end 2011 to 2015.

“Under terms of the $30 million (about R220 million) contract executed with Westinghouse Electric Sweden AB, Westinghouse will produce fuel at its fabrication facility in Västerås, Sweden,” the statement added.

“We are pleased to be able to continue to assist the Republic of South Africa in its ongoing and successful effort to generate the safe, clean and reliable electricity necessary to fuel continued economic growth,” said Rita Bowser, regional vice president for Westinghouse Electric SA.

Wealthy consumers and companies may face an electricity price increase of more than 34 percent this year, Eskom spokesperson Fanie Zulu conceded on Wednesday.

Zulu said he "can't guarantee" that higher income groups would not be asked to pay more than the 34 percent hike Eskom was demanding to cover its operational costs, in the likely event that the increase was staggered to grant the poor relief.

"So the rich may pay more," he told Sapa after briefing Parliament's public enterprises portfolio committee.

"It happened last year when Nersa (National Energy Regulator of SA) said 14.5 percent and then the affluent paid more," Zulu added, referring to the cap the national regulator put on price hikes for low income consumers after granting a general tariff hike of 27 percent.

Zulu said industry might also have to pay more.

He added however that the decision was not up to Eskom but to Nersa, which was considering the tariff increase application.

SA sets up task team to drive future nuclear development

The South African government has established a nuclear task team to develop a framework for procuring a nuclear technology partner to support both the nuclear power station build programme, and the associated industrialisation process.“This will probably take about a year,” Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) DG Portia Molefe told journalists in Pretoria on Friday.This came after Eskom announced that it would not award the tender for the nuclear power station that was originally proposed to come into service in 2017. A consortium led by Areva of France, and another consortium led by US-based Westinghouse were the two preferred bidders for the contract, and negotiations had been taking place for about a year.The core change was that instead of just procuring only one power station, the task team would be looking for a partner that would co-develop the nuclear industry in South Africa, and assist in the introduction of broadening of the nuclear base, which currently consists of only the Koeberg power station.

South Africans will soon be allocated a quota of electricity.

This was revealed today by Eskom CEO, Jacob Maroga, who met with executives of 131 key customers to discuss solutions for the ongoing power outages.
